The San Juan festival is a holiday filled with joy, noise, firecrackers, and bonfires. For people, it’s a fun celebration, but for our pets, especially dogs, it can become a real nightmare. The loud sound of firecrackers and fireworks causes great fear and stress in them, due to their much more acute hearing. Dogs can hear up to 60 kHz, while we only reach 20 kHz, which is why the noise affects them so much.
When pets hear a firecracker, their bodies release stress hormones, and since they don’t have time to recover between explosions, their fear increases. This panic can lead them to run away, hide, tremble, or even have accidents.
To protect our pets, it’s important to prepare in advance. Implementing desensitization therapies, behavior modification techniques, or, in some cases, safe medication to reduce anxiety during the festival would be ideal. Additionally, it’s important to take your dog for a walk before the noise starts, close windows, lower blinds, and play soft music to reduce the impact of the outside world.
And to reward our pets after these difficult times, we can offer them vitamin-infused candy bars for dogs and cats, a natural snack that helps calm, entertain, and maintain their health at the same time.
