¿Do you know how to understand your dog’s barking?
¡Find out in this post!
Wolves, which are the great ancestors of dogs, don’t bark so as not to betray their presence in the woods. On the other hand, dogs continually use their barking to manifest themselves. Dogs use barking to communicate with humans and also with its companions, congeners and other animals.
¿What does your dog’s barks express?
With barking they express their emotions, their requests and needs. Each bark, accompanied by a certain body movement, manifests wanting to play, being cheerful and happy, being afraid, feeling frustrated, being hungry or thirsty, or wanting to let us know that something is happening.
Sometimes barking is preceded or replaced by growling, moaning, sighing, or panting. Other times, to a lesser extent, they emit howls and screams. We will be closer to our dogs, and they will trust us more if we care to understand them better through their signals.
When we spend time and pay attention to our dogs, they respond with an endless number of gesticulations such as jumps, tail wiggles, runs and all kinds of expressive glances that, in combination with barking, turns into life vitality signals, without asking for anything in return… or maybe yes. But, anyway, it is a great repertoire of canine communication.
Sometimes, if a dog is stressed for some reason, it can end up being aggressive or running away, but there is always a cause behind that reaction. Emotionality is always present in multiple reactions that drive our dogs to demonstrate with endless gesticulations and sounds that characterize them. Sometimes they can be annoying, depending on the type of neurotic or compulsive disorder that may be behind such manifestation.
They are not human, and it is difficult for them to make themselves understood, but they depend on us and we must try to help them to avoid their suffering.

The large number of vocalizations used by dogs, which correspond to a wide repertoire of emotions and motives, teach us their extensive “canine oral language” that allows us to better communicate with our faithful friends.
Using an old thought…
“Out of all ways of communicating, barking is the loudest and the most understandable by humans since it is comparable to our oral language. If people communicate mostly by talking, dogs have learned that expressing sounds is the most appropriate way to communicate with them.”
